Suez Continues to Deal with Fires Cause from Vapes, Despite Ban
Summary
Despite a ban on disposable vapes, UK waste management firm Suez continues to experience significant issues with fires caused by the devices' lithium batteries at its facilities and on collection trucks. Suez, which manages over 300 waste sites in the UK, has reported 339 fires this year alone. Although the number of vapes sold has reportedly decreased by 50%, Adam Read, Suez's chief sustainability and external affairs officer, stated that vapes remain a common sight dumped in streets, bins, and recycling centers. Read characterized the ban as an important but insufficient "sticking-plaster solution" to the large volume of vapes entering the waste stream daily.
