Mexico’s Congress Prepares Total Ban on Vapes and E-Cigarettes
Summary
Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies is preparing to vote on a comprehensive ban of vapes and e-cigarettes as part of a reform to the General Health Law. The proposed legislation would prohibit the manufacturing, sale, import, and export of these products, carrying penalties of up to eight years in prison and fines exceeding 200,000 pesos (approximately USD 11,000). Alongside this ban, lawmakers are also considering reforms to the Circular Economy Law, aiming to promote sustainability by extending product lifecycles and reducing waste, and adjustments to import/export tariffs to protect domestic industries. The legislative session is expected to be intense, with votes anticipated by December 11th or 12th.
