Smokers Who Vape More Likely to Quit or Cut Back
Summary
A recent study published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research indicates that smokers who use both cigarettes and vape devices (“dual users”) are more likely to quit smoking altogether compared to those who only smoke. Researchers found that dual users also significantly reduced their cigarette consumption, leading to decreased exposure to harmful chemicals. Senior researcher Peter Hajek of Queen Mary University of London stated that dual use can be a “useful step to stopping smoking altogether,” challenging the belief that it hinders progress. The study analyzed data from a UK trial involving 886 smokers and revealed that dual users were nearly 4.5 times more likely to stop smoking within a month and cut their smoking amount in half within a year. Furthermore, e-cigarette users experienced fewer cravings and many reduced nicotine levels over time. While complete cessation remains the optimal health outcome, the research suggests vaping can aid in gradual smoking reduction.
