Kuah Boon Theng on Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) (Amendment) and Other Matters Bill

CNA
NMP Kuah Boon Theng questioned the effectiveness of current measures to address youth vaping and proposed a national support program.

Summary

During a parliamentary debate on the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) (Amendment) and Other Matters Bill on March 6th, Nominated Member of Parliament Kuah Boon Theng raised concerns about the growing issue of youth vaping. She highlighted the difficulty of overcoming addiction, particularly for young people, and questioned whether existing penalties like fines, warnings, or counseling would be sufficient to help students quit vaping. Ms. Kuah also expressed concern about the burden placed on schools to manage this issue independently. To address this, she proposed the Ministry of Health establish a team of specialists to develop a national protocol or program. This program would provide clear guidance to both schools and parents on supporting youths in breaking various addictions, including vaping, gaming, and pornography. Finally, she inquired about measures to prevent relapse among young vape users.
