Seventy percent of Edinburgh vape shops required to update details
Summary
A recent review found that 73.1% (528 out of 722) of registered vape shops in Edinburgh have been flagged for needing to update their information on the Scottish Government’s online registry. While these shops are currently registered and compliant, the government requires proprietors to maintain accurate records. Councillor Susan Rae of the Scottish Greens has called for tighter regulations, noting the lack of local regulatory power over the approximately 600 vape shops in the city. This issue gained prominence following a devastating fire in Glasgow, believed to have started in a vape shop, and similar issues were found in Glasgow, where nearly 80% of shops had outdated information. The Scottish Government is considering tightening regulations, with First Minister John Swinney stating they are “open minded” about the possibility, and fines of up to £20,000 can be levied for non-compliance.
