Smoking and vaping may be banned in list of outdoor places
Summary
The UK government is considering extending smoke-free laws to various outdoor public spaces, following a consultation that closed on May 8. A YouGov poll commissioned by the charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) found that 93% of adults support smoke-free playgrounds, 78% back smoke-free bus stops, and 62% support smoke-free pub gardens. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which became law last month, prohibits the sale of cigarettes to anyone under 17. Ash chief executive Hazel Cheeseman stated that extending these laws to areas like pub gardens, play areas, university campuses, and transport hubs is a common-sense step to protect health. The government estimates the new legislation could reduce the number of smokers to 701,167 by 2056 and prevent 154,800 deaths in England by 2100. The Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson noted that the consultation on creating smoke, vape, and heated tobacco-free places is being carefully considered.
