Nine times more likely than adults: CAP warns Malaysia is losing a generation to vaping
Summary
The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has raised serious concerns about the surge in teen vaping, warning that Malaysia risks losing a generation to nicotine addiction. Education officer N.V. Subbarow highlighted that despite health campaigns, vapes are increasingly popular among young people due to appealing flavours and modern designs. He noted that students often view vaping as safe, unaware of the actual contents, and that many seized vapes have been mixed with drugs. In conjunction with World No Tobacco Day 2026, CAP is calling for a total ban on all nicotine products, including cigarettes, vapes, and heated tobacco products, to protect the youth. The association also urged the government to act immediately, citing that eight ASEAN member states have already banned electronic smoking devices. Subbarow emphasized the need to counter industry strategies that use synthetic nicotine and attractive marketing to target young consumers, citing global data that children aged 13 to 15 are nine times more likely to vape than adults.
