Dzulkefly: 402 vape cases involving synthetic drugs give strong basis for national vape ban
Summary
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad announced that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) recorded 402 cases involving vape devices and liquids mixed with dangerous synthetic drugs up to April this year. He stated that the detection of substances like benzodiazepine, nimetazepam, MDMA, cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol, and methamphetamine in vape preparations provides a compelling argument for a ban. The matter is under government consideration, with the Ministry of Health (MOH) actively involved. This decision follows a similar statement by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay regarding the new synthetic drug "Piu Piu" found in e-cigarette liquids. The MOH is strengthening enforcement through cross-agency cooperation with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the PDRM. Concurrently, the MOH launched the "Cik Era Rides the MRT" programme and promoted the "Cik Era AI" virtual companion application to help individuals quit smoking and vaping, alongside the "JomQuit" platform for nicotine addiction treatment, all aimed at reducing the burden of chronic diseases and achieving a smoke-free generation in Malaysia.
