A recent people2people survey reveals that workplace vaping has become firmly entrenched, with 57% of employees having witnessed it at work, 43% seeing it more than once, and nearly a third observing it during virtual meetings. Despite its growing prevalence, many workers are unaware that vaping is subject to the same restrictions as cigarette smoking in enclosed indoor workplaces. Suhini Wijayasinghe, Head of HR Solutions at people2people Recruitment, emphasized the importance of clear, specific communication in workplace policies that explicitly address both smoking and vaping, including designating outdoor areas for breaks. Remote work has further complicated the issue, with 55% of respondents saying vaping during virtual meetings is never acceptable, while 11% consider it fine when working from home. Generational differences also emerged, with Gen Z most likely to vape at work and deem it acceptable during meetings, while older generations showed greater disapproval. Wijayasinghe concluded that clear, neutral policies supported by practical guidance and wellbeing resources are more effective than assumptions about employee knowledge.
