Vape tax comes into force this week: Here's what's changing and how much costs will rise
Summary
The UK is introducing a new Vaping Products Duty from October 1, 2026, imposing £2.20 per 10ml of e-liquid, or £2.64 with VAT, as announced in the 2024 autumn Budget by former chancellor Rachel Reeves. The tax aims to curb youth vaping and raise about £550million a year by 2030-31, but industry bodies warn it could make vaping up to 264 per cent more expensive, push half of vapers back to smoking or the black market, and fail to reduce youth vaping. Full cost impacts may be gradual, as shops can sell pre-duty stock until March 2027, but manufacturers face new compliance costs for duty stamps and bonded warehousing. Surveys show most vapers are unaware of the changes, and the UKVIA and retailers are calling for a review, a rate freeze, and better enforcement.
