Stagecoach South East steps up action to tackle vaping on buses
Summary
Stagecoach South East is ramping up efforts to combat vaping on its buses following reports submitted by drivers through its RideRight system. Revenue Protection team members have conducted plain-clothes checks, during which one Business Improvement Inspector identified passengers vaping across five services. Reports were highest in Hastings, followed by Herne Bay and Dover, though incidents occur across the entire network. Many of those observed vaping were young people travelling to and from educational establishments in Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, and the Ashford area. Managing Director Joel Mitchell emphasized the value of driver-reported information, stating it enables targeted action to reinforce that vaping is not permitted on buses. The company plans to establish a regular programme of targeted checks and explore opportunities to engage with local schools and colleges. The work is part of a wider approach to tackling antisocial behaviour and creating a safe, welcoming environment for customers and employees.
