Vaping will cost an extra £50 a month from TODAY - here's everything you need to know about new tax that also affects smokers
Summary
From today, a new UK levy of £2.20 per 10ml of vape liquid could cost heavy vapers up to £600 more a year, with a bottle previously priced around £3.99 now costing almost £7. Smokers are also hit: a typical pack of 20 cigarettes rises by 44p, equivalent to about £160 a year for a pack-a-day smoker, while combined duty increases could add £1.20 per pack, or £440 a year for heavy smokers. A 50g pouch of tobacco is expected to rise by around £4.20, adding almost £110 a year for fortnightly users and £218 for weekly buyers. The changes aim to keep vaping cheaper than smoking while discouraging youth uptake, and come weeks before a UK-wide ban on selling vapes and nicotine products to under-18s on October 29. The Government also plans to ban vaping in cars with children, extend smoke-free rules to vaping in workplaces, pubs and public transport, and prohibit smoking and vaping in some outdoor areas like playgrounds and outside schools. Critics warn that making vaping much more expensive could deter smokers from using e-cigarettes to quit, even though evidence shows vaping is far less harmful than smoking. Around 5.4 million UK adults now vape, compared with 4.9 million who smoke.
