Vaping Family Members Raise Kids' Asthma Risks
Summary
A new study of over 48,000 doctor visits for children with asthma found that secondhand exposure to e-cigarette vapor increases the odds of asthma attacks. Children in homes where both traditional cigarettes and vaping occurred had the highest rates of asthma flare-ups, including nighttime symptoms, activity-related breathing problems, greater rescue inhaler use, and more hospital admissions. However, even exposure to just vaping or just smoking alone was linked to more asthma symptoms. Lead author Dr. Brian Jenssen of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia emphasized that there is no safe level of tobacco or e-cigarette exposure for children, and that parents should quit using all tobacco or nicotine products rather than switching to vaping, ideally using evidence-based methods such as varenicline, nicotine replacement therapy, and counseling. The findings were presented at a medical meeting and are considered preliminary until peer-reviewed publication.
