Cigarettes to hit €20 a box for the first time from midnight tonight
Summary
The price of a packet of 20 cigarettes will increase by €1 from midnight tonight, pushing the cost above €20 and breaking the €1 per cigarette barrier. This marks a €2.50 rise over the last three budgets, compared to the typical 50 cent increase. Other tobacco products will also rise pro rata. Minister Simon Harris said the measure aims to discourage smoking, especially among young people. Additionally, vapes will become more expensive due to a 20 cents per ml increase in the E-liquid Products Tax (EPT) announced in the budget. The EPT, effective since 1 November 2025, imposes a 50c per ml excise duty and 23% VAT. Standard disposable vapes with 2ml of e-liquid will cost 40 cents more, while a 10ml refill bottle will increase by €2.
