CVA Urges Education Over Prohibition as Youth Vaping Declines - Tobacco Reporter

Tobacco Reporter
The Canadian Vaping Association advocates for youth education over bans, citing declining youth vaping rates and risks to adult smokers.

Summary

The Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) is urging federal and provincial health ministers to focus on youth prevention and education rather than implementing restrictive vaping bans. The CVA warns that prohibitionist policies risk pushing adult smokers back to traditional cigarettes, jeopardizing Canada's goal of reducing smoking rates below 5% by 2035. Citing Statistics Canada data, the association noted that youth vaping among 12–17-year-olds has dropped to 7.2% in 2025, nearly half the 2019 peak, which they attribute to education programs. CVA President Sam Tam stressed that measures like flavor bans undermine harm-reduction efforts essential for adult smokers. The group insists that banning legal, regulated, flavored products will only drive consumers to an illicit black market, and they advocate instead for evidence-based regulation, enforcement, and expanded cessation resources.
