Mr. Muhammad Dandiar Rosli switched to vaping believing it was cheaper than smoking, but just one month into vaping in 2020, he was hospitalized with breathlessness and thick, yellow phlegm. A bronchoscopy diagnosed him with pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, a rare lung disease where protein and fatty material clog the air sacs, severely impeding breathing. His recovery involved two hospital stays and four procedures called lung lavage, where sterile saline is used to wash out the abnormal buildup. Five years later, the memory of the treatment and the high medical costs still affect him.
