Less high school students are using tobacco products, according to NYDOH
Summary
The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) reports that tobacco use among high school students has reached a record low of 17%, a 17% decrease since 2000. This figure encompasses all tobacco products, including cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and nicotine pouches. While cigarette smoking remains low at just over 2%, e-cigarette use has significantly dropped from nearly 19% in 2022 to about 13% in 2024, though vaping is still the most common form of use. Conversely, nicotine pouch use has doubled from 1.5% to 3.0% since 2022, causing concern due to appealing flavors and high addiction potential. State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald hailed the decline as a major public health achievement resulting from strong control policies, but stressed commitment to further reducing use, noting that the rise of e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, alongside cuts to federal prevention programs, poses a serious threat.
