The Maldivian government has amended its Tobacco Control Act to implement a generational ban on tobacco, making it the first country to do so. This ban prohibits anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, from smoking, using, or purchasing tobacco products. The legislation, which aligns with President Mohamed Muizzu's vision, also restricts sales to those under 21 or born after the cut-off date. Furthermore, the Maldives has enforced a nationwide ban on electronic cigarettes and vaping products, including their use, possession, importation, and manufacture. Importing vaping devices specifically carries a substantial fine of MVR 50,000 (approximately 3,250 US dollars).
