KentOnline finds vape shops flouting law over disposal scheme
Summary
KentOnline’s investigation found that numerous vape shops in Kent are not adhering to legal requirements for providing safe vape disposal services, raising concerns about battery-related fires. Waste firm Biffa reports that vapes are the largest contributor to battery fires at its recycling centers, accounting for almost half of all fires. Experts estimate that 10 million vapes were discarded in Kent in 2024 alone. While retailers are legally obligated to offer a “take-back” scheme, many refuse, citing costs and limited enforcement. Of 30 shops inspected, only five accepted used vapes or batteries, with some staff even advising customers to dispose of them in general waste. Those aware of the rules often lacked collection systems or expressed safety concerns. Customers are encouraged to report non-compliant shops to the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).
