Henrico tightens regulations on vape shops
Summary
The Henrico County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved tougher regulations for vape shops, now categorized as “recreational substances retail stores,” following an investigation revealing numerous violations. New stores will be limited to B-3 Business and M-1 Industrial zoning districts and require a provisional use permit. They must also be located at least 1,000 feet from schools and 2,000 feet from religious institutions, daycares, parks, or other recreational substance stores. The investigation found 30 shops illegally selling to minors and over 300 other violations, including fire hazards and unsafe living conditions. Officials highlighted the dangers of unregulated products, which have been found to contain molds, toxins, and even lighter fluid. Concerns extend to even elementary-aged children vaping, and the ordinance will also apply to businesses selling legal cannabis as that market develops.
