2FIRSTS | South Korea Formalizes Harmful Substance Controls for Cigarettes and E-cigarettes
Summary
South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has announced new regulations requiring testing for harmful substances in tobacco products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Cigarettes and heated tobacco products must undergo testing for 44 components, such as nicotine and tar, while liquid e-cigarettes will be tested for 20 substances, including nicotine, propylene glycol, and glycerin. These testing methods align with standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Manufacturers and importers are responsible for submitting test results to the MFDS, which plans to enhance oversight and improve testing accuracy based on scientific evidence. This initiative aims to systematically manage harmful substances in tobacco and protect public health.
