Government to hit vapers with tax on all liquids from this date
Summary
The UK government is introducing a new Vaping Products Duty (VPD) of £2.20 per 10ml of all vaping liquids, effective this autumn. Including VAT, this will increase the cost of a 10ml bottle to £2.64, with some affordable products potentially rising by 267%. The government states the duty aims to reduce vaping uptake, particularly among non-smokers and young people, while still incentivizing smokers to switch to vaping. Approximately 5.1 million vapers will be affected, and the government expects to raise £135 million in 2026–27, increasing to £565 million by 2030–31. A Vaping Duty Stamp (VDS) will also be required from April 2027 to improve traceability and combat illegal trade. Industry representatives, like the UK Vaping Industry Association, criticize the tax as a revenue grab that will harm former smokers who have switched to vaping and will result in the highest vaping tax rate in Europe.
