DTI proposes ban on vape open pods, e-liquids
Summary
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is proposing a ban on vape open pods and e-liquids to protect consumers from potential health risks. The proposed Department Administrative Order (DAO) would prohibit the use, manufacture, importation, and distribution of these products, citing the ability to use uncertified e-liquids and the potential for them to be laced with harmful substances, referencing the recent case of “Tuklaw” cigarettes. The DTI is acting under Republic Act No. 11900, aiming to safeguard the public from harmful substances, and cites a World Health Organization (WHO) study recommending the prohibition of open pods due to their modifiable features and abuse potential. The agency will cease processing licenses for these products while gathering feedback until February 4th, and is also considering a mandatory permit for advertising and sales promotion of vape products.
