Spike in young Aussies vaping despite knowing risks
Summary
A recent survey by the Burnet Institute reveals a concerning trend: vaping is on the rise among young Australians aged 15-29, increasing by 10% in the past year, with one in three now reporting current use. Participants in the 2025 Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll survey demonstrated a strong awareness of the harmfulness of vaping, rating it an average of 89 out of 100. However, this knowledge isn't translating into behavioral change. Burnet Institute Head of Young People's Health, Megan Lim, notes a “real disconnect between awareness and behaviour.” The study also indicated widespread alcohol and drug use among young people, with 95% reporting alcohol consumption and over 70% having used drugs in the past year. Furthermore, the survey highlighted gaps in sexual health knowledge, particularly regarding chlamydia and comprehensive sexual education in schools.
