Vaping, smoking, snus causing dozens of daily ER visits due to nicotine overdoses
Summary
A recent study conducted across 67 Dutch emergency departments found that nicotine use – from smoking, vaping, and snus – contributes to a significant number of emergency room visits. Approximately 7% of patients presented with symptoms directly linked to nicotine, extrapolating to an estimated 26,000 visits annually out of the 1.8 million total. The study, led by Nicole Kraaijvanger of Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), surveyed over 2,000 patients aged 12 and above. While traditional cigarettes remain the primary source of nicotine-related issues (86% of users), vaping is linked to respiratory problems, and snus also contributes to health complaints. Researchers believe the actual number of nicotine-related visits may be even higher, as severely ill patients may not have been able to complete the survey. The findings highlight the strain nicotine use places on emergency services and emphasize the need for prevention and intervention strategies.
