Research Summary | NHANES Study: Smoking or E-Cigarette Use Linked to Higher Prevalence of Elevated Blood Pressure and Hypertension
Summary
A cross-sectional analysis of data from the US NHANES 2021-2023 cycle, involving 6,262 participants over age 12, revealed a significant association between smoking and/or e-cigarette use and increased rates of elevated blood pressure and hypertension. Compared to non-users, those who smoked or vaped exhibited a 54.4% prevalence of elevated blood pressure versus 39.2%, and a 15.4% prevalence of hypertension versus 11.8%. After adjustments, smoking/vaping was linked to a 34% higher odds of elevated blood pressure (aOR 1.34) and a 46% higher odds of hypertension (aOR 1.46), along with a 1.05 mmHg increase in diastolic blood pressure. The study, published in the American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology, provides regulators with data to evaluate the health impacts of e-cigarettes and suggests a need for further consideration of dual use patterns in risk assessment and regulation.
