Vape retailers in NZ respond to restrictions with 'stores within stores'
Summary
A recent study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal examines the rise of “store-within-a-store” (SWAS) vape outlets in New Zealand, a response to new regulations. Researchers used Google Maps and Street View to assess the location of these retailers relative to schools and Māori meeting grounds (marae), categorizing them by type. The study found that SWAS outlets are disproportionately located in areas with higher socio-economic deprivation and residential zones, rather than commercial centers. This concentration raises concerns that these outlets may undermine efforts to reduce youth access to vape products, particularly in communities already facing health inequities. The research was funded by the Health Research Council New Zealand.
