Vaping to be banned in cars carrying children under new Government plans
Summary
The UK Government is proposing new measures to expand smoke-free spaces and protect children from the health risks associated with secondhand smoke. These plans include banning vaping and smoking in cars carrying individuals under 18, as well as in children’s playgrounds and outside school premises. Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the importance of protecting children and vulnerable people from the dangers of secondhand smoke, which can increase the risk of heart disease and lung cancer. Existing indoor smoke-free areas will also become vape-free and heated tobacco-free. While smoking will be prohibited outside hospitals, vaping will still be allowed to support smokers attempting to quit. Exemptions will apply to outdoor hospitality spaces and wide-open public areas. The proposals are part of the wider Tobacco and Vapes Bill currently progressing through Parliament, and have been welcomed by health charities.
