Illegal vapes hidden in plain sight in Malaysia’s Klang Valley
Summary
Despite the enforcement of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), unregulated vape devices and liquids are still being sold in physical stores across Malaysia’s Klang Valley. Sellers openly offer vape juice with nicotine levels exceeding the legal limit of 20mg/ml and disposable vapes with more than 3,000 puffs. Some stores conceal these products but display them upon request, citing a desire to clear old stock before enforcement increases. While major e-commerce sites have removed these products, they remain accessible on individual websites with minimal age verification. The situation violates Act 852, which requires age verification and regulates sales. The government is moving towards a total ban on vapes, starting with open-system devices, due to concerns about misuse and the presence of synthetic drugs.
