Over 100 Closure Orders Hit Illegal Tobacconists
Summary
NSW Health inspectors have issued 105 short-term closure orders to businesses selling illicit tobacco and vaping products since new laws came into effect in November 2025. This action comes as a federal tobacco excise increase is expected to drive more people towards the illicit market. In the past 10 days alone, 30 stores across various Local Health Districts were shut down for 90 days, with approximately 700,000 illicit cigarettes and 3,900 illicit vapes seized. The NSW government has implemented tougher laws, including significant penalties and lease termination powers for landlords, to disrupt the supply of these illegal products. They have also increased the number of dedicated tobacco inspectors to 78. Minister for Health, Ryan Park, stated that these closures demonstrate the government’s commitment to prosecuting those involved and protecting public health.
