YouTuber Chris Doel created a functional electric vehicle battery pack by salvaging lithium-ion batteries from 500 disposable vapes. He tested and assembled the cells into a 50-volt, 2.5-kilowatt-hour pack, housed in a 3D-printed and aluminum enclosure with safety features like fuses, a battery management system, and temperature sensors. While the resulting pack, which can be charged via USB-C, has limitations – a maximum output of 120 amps compared to the car’s 300 amp request, and a range of 18 miles versus the original car’s 50 miles – it successfully powered a G-Wiz EV, reaching speeds of around 40 mph. The project demonstrates the potential for repurposing waste batteries and giving them a second life.
