Bombshell study finds vaping probably causes two types of cancer
Summary
Australian researchers have concluded that nicotine-based vapes likely increase the risk of lung and oral cancers. A comprehensive review of existing studies and laboratory research, led by Professor Bernard Stewart from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), found “unequivocal” evidence of this increased risk. The study identified numerous carcinogenic compounds in e-cigarette aerosols, including volatile organic chemicals and metals. While vaping is considered less harmful than smoking, researchers emphasize it is not harm-free and warn of its potential as a gateway to smoking, particularly with the prevalence of flavored devices. However, Professor Peter Hajek from Queen Mary University of London criticized the review, stating its conclusions are “misleading” as they don’t compare vapers to smokers and focus on negligible chemical traces, potentially discouraging smokers from switching to a less harmful alternative.
