Vape shop guidance to be issued after fire service inspections in wake of Union Street blaze
Summary
Glasgow vape shops are being inspected by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) following the devastating fire on Union Street on March 8th. The fire, which began in a vape shop at 105 Union Street, caused significant damage, including the near-total destruction of a B-listed building and weeks-long closure of Glasgow Central Station. While a full audit of all vape shops is deemed “probably impossible” due to limited resources (a team of eight personnel), the SFRS is conducting a thematic audit of 36 hand-picked vape shops to gather information and provide general safety guidance. This guidance will then be distributed more widely. A motion is being considered by the Glasgow City Council to request additional funding from the Scottish Government to support increased fire safety engagement with businesses selling vaping products and those containing lithium-ion batteries. The cause of the Union Street fire is still under investigation, and the thematic audit is expected to take around eight weeks to complete.
