Indonesia to implement e-cigarette regulation in July
Summary
The Indonesian Ministry of Health is preparing to enforce Government Regulation Number 28 of 2024, which regulates e-cigarettes similarly to traditional cigarettes. The regulation includes age restrictions – prohibiting use for those under 21 – controls on advertising, including on social media, and standards for product content. Vape products must adhere to maximum nicotine levels and avoid harmful additives, and will require pictorial health warnings. The regulation also bans e-cigarette use in smoke-free areas. Implementation is slated for July, accompanied by supporting ministerial regulations and public health education initiatives. Experts, like Professor Faisal Yunus, emphasize the need for continued strengthening of regulations to address issues like easy access, appealing flavors, and youth-targeted marketing.
