Glen Innes council supports crackdown on sale of illicit vaping and cigarette products
Summary
The New England Police and NSW Health recently conducted a joint operation resulting in the seizure of $84,000 worth of illicit tobacco and vaping products from premises in Glen Innes and Armidale. Three tobacconists received three-month closure notices due to non-compliance with the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008. Mayor Margot Davis of the Glen Innes Severn Council praised the operation, emphasizing the council’s long-standing concerns regarding the availability of these products and their links to organized crime and public health issues. The council has actively advocated for stronger regulations, increased enforcement, and interagency cooperation to combat the illegal trade, and recently contributed evidence to a parliamentary inquiry on the matter. Davis thanked the agencies involved and encouraged continued community reporting of illegal activity.
