Britain's perfect high street revealed - free parking, bakery, independent coffee shop
Summary
A new report by the Voices of Retail has identified the top elements Brits desire on their local high streets, with a bakery, free parking, and an independent coffee shop topping the list. The survey of 2,040 shoppers and 650 retailers also highlighted a strong demand for banks, cash points, independent restaurants, and butchers. Despite the closure of major chains like Claire's and Poundland, the report suggests a resilient future for high streets, driven by a desire for community connection and human interaction. Independent retailers are reporting stable or growing trade, with 95% of shoppers willing to spend more if a better mix of shops were available. Free short-stay parking is considered essential by more than two-thirds of respondents, while unwanted elements include vape shops, boarded-up units, and gambling arcades. The findings come as the government pledges £319 million in rejuvenation funds through the 'Pride in Place' scheme.
