Angela Rayner quits vaping
Summary
Angela Rayner has quit vaping nine months after she was photographed using one on a dinghy near Brighton beach. The former deputy prime minister, who once said her children nicknamed her the "vape dragon", has recently given up the habit. Her decision was revealed by Housing Secretary Steve Reed, who dined with Ms Rayner on Saturday evening. Mr Reed said they discussed "normal human being things" and that she had given up vaping. He praised her skills as a communicator and said he wanted to see her return to the Cabinet "in time". Ms Rayner previously said she had taken up vaping to help her quit smoking, but had long intended to stop. She has described vaping as "incredibly addictive and costly as well". Her decision to quit vaping may be viewed as an effort to appear more prime ministerial, along with a broader effort to rebuild her standing following controversy surrounding her unpaid tax bill. Ms Rayner is also weighing up an offer from Sir Keir to return to the Cabinet as he battles for his political future. However, Mr Burnham's allies have told Ms Rayner to strike a leadership pact in which she would succeed him in Downing Street.
