Retailers have no need to fear new tobacco laws
Summary
The UK's new tobacco laws, aiming for a “smoke-free generation” by preventing the sale of tobacco to anyone born after January 1, 2009, will not pose a significant threat to retailers. While a shift, it’s a gradual one, mirroring the existing decline in smoking rates and tobacco sales. Tobacco already represents a shrinking product line for most of the UK’s 56,000 tobacco retailers, with tight margins and increasing regulation. Sales have fallen due to effective policies, not an illicit market. Furthermore, tobacco isn’t the most profitable part of retail, with margins around 8.5% compared to over 37% for vapes. Retailers will need to adapt to enforcing the new rules, but existing systems like Challenge 25 can be utilized with proper training and guidance. Concerns about illicit trade are unfounded, as demand will decrease, and the initial impact will be minimal. Ultimately, retailers who proactively engage with the changes will contribute to a healthier high street.
