What Macon-Bibb County’s new vape shop rules mean moving forward
Summary
Macon-Bibb County has approved new regulations to limit the number and placement of vape shops, following a 90-day moratorium passed in October. The regulations, approved on January 12th by the Planning and Zoning Commission, define vape shops as retailers where at least 35% of sales are vape products. These shops must now be located at least half a mile (2,640 feet) from schools, universities, and facilities providing childcare, as well as from other existing vape shops. Jeffery Ruggieri, the Planning and Zoning Executive Director, stated the goal is to reduce exposure to vaping for young people and prevent the county from becoming a hub for vape shops due to less restrictive regulations elsewhere. Currently, there are 38 vape shops in Macon, and the new rules aim to control their future distribution.
