2FIRSTS | Indonesia’s vape retailers adopt 21+ signage and ID verification requirements, report says
Summary
The Association of Indonesian Vape Retailers (Arvindo) has instructed its members to enforce a minimum age of 21 for purchasing e-cigarettes, requiring both prominent 21+ signage and valid ID verification. This move is presented as alignment with the Indonesian government’s initiatives to limit youth access to vaping products. Arvindo also advocates for science-based regulation and recognizes the potential of vaping for harm reduction, citing a 2025 JAMA Network study that identified e-cigarettes as a leading smoking cessation tool in England. The Tar and Smoke Free Movement (Gebrak) supports limiting alternative products to adult smokers. These changes occur amidst high smoking rates in Indonesia, with approximately 70 million active smokers and a concerning rise in youth smoking prevalence between 2016 and 2019.
