Spotlight On Vape Prevention Among Young People
Summary
The City of Greater Geelong has intensified efforts to address the growing public health concern of vaping among young people, who are frequently targeted by marketing and exposed to mislabeled products. An 18-month Vaping Prevention Project, funded by VicHealth and led by the Barwon South West Vaping Prevention Coalition (BSWVPC), culminated in a short film screening celebrating youth co-designed projects across six local government areas. The film highlights the importance of honest information and support options, empowering young people to make informed choices, and will be used in school workshops. A trial of vape recycling bins at youth hubs successfully collected 33kg of vapes and has been extended, with additional locations added at resource recovery centers. Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM praised the Youth Vape Prevention Action Group, emphasizing the value of youth expertise and leadership in addressing this issue. Isabella Harvey, a member of the group, stated that young people understand the pressures and effective messaging needed to combat vaping.
