Vaping could kill
Summary
A new study from the University of Exeter analyzing data from over 6,200 individuals suggests that vaping could raise blood pressure, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes. While the NHS maintains vaping is safer than smoking, researchers found that both smokers and vapers had significantly higher blood pressure than non-smokers, with a 46% increased risk of hypertension. Even exclusive vapers showed a 15% higher risk of elevated blood pressure, though this result wasn't statistically significant due to the limited sample size. Professor Andrew Agbaje explained that increased blood pressure can strain the heart, potentially causing arrhythmia, heart failure, or heart attacks. The study also noted that smokers and vapers tended to be younger and have higher cholesterol levels. Researchers conclude that preventing young people from starting to vape or smoke is the best way to reduce long-term cardiovascular disease risk.
