WHO AFRO Strengthens Legal Capacity for Tobacco Control Through Advanced Training Partnership with McCabe Centre
Summary
The WHO Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) and the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer continue their partnership to strengthen legal capacity for tobacco control across the African Region. Since 2014, the McCabe Centre has trained 50 lawyers from the region, who have been instrumental in developing national legislation and defending against tobacco industry legal challenges, notably in Uganda and Kenya. A recent advanced workshop in Melbourne, Australia, from March 23-27, 2026, equipped 40 legal and public health professionals, including five from the WHO African Region, with advanced skills in areas like WHO FCTC implementation, regulation of e-cigarettes, and addressing tobacco industry interference. The workshop fostered a network of legal experts and facilitated discussions to tailor tobacco control actions to specific African countries, reinforcing the importance of strong legal frameworks in protecting public health.
