Belgium Calls on the EU to Limit Ingredients in Vaping Products and Ban Puffs
Summary
Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke is advocating for stricter EU regulations on e-cigarettes, particularly those appealing to young people. He describes vaping as an “epidemic” and highlights the presence of over 2,000 ingredients, including heavy metals and toxic substances, in these products. Vandenbroucke calls for a ban on disposable “puff” models across the EU, harmonization of permitted substances, and limiting flavors to tobacco only. European Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, acknowledged the problem and emphasized the need for cooperation. This initiative coincides with ongoing negotiations regarding the revision of the tobacco excise directive, where Belgium, along with France, believes current measures are insufficient to meet the EU’s cancer plan goals of reducing tobacco use to under 5% by 2040. Concerns have been raised regarding the influence of the tobacco industry on negotiations, particularly from Cyprus and other member states.
