Penang smoking rates fall 15% as state pushes for vape ban
Summary
Penang has experienced a significant 15.2% reduction in adult smoking prevalence, according to the latest National Health and Morbidity Survey. State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen highlighted that this decrease represents a substantial number of former smokers. While vape usage remains at approximately 3% (around 38,000 users), it is lower than in many other states. Gooi attributes this positive trend to the state government’s enforcement efforts, health education programs, and public awareness campaigns. The state government is actively seeking a federal ban on vape products, believing it will further lower smoking rates and is prepared to comply with any nationwide ban on both the sale and use of electronic cigarettes. Additionally, Penang is collaborating with airlines and airport operators to enforce smoking bans, including potential announcements on international flights reminding visitors of prohibited areas, such as the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, in accordance with the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024.
