How to Read a Vape Lab Report (and Spot a Fake "Nicotine-Free" Claim)
Most "nicotine-free" claims are unverifiable. The words sit on a box with nothing behind them, and the one document that could settle the question — a lab report — is the one shoppers rarely see. So here’s how to read one.
Start with the nicotine line. You want "ND": Not Detected. That is not the same as "0 mg" printed on packaging. "0 mg" is a claim; "ND" is a measurement, usually from an LC-MS/MS instrument sensitive enough to catch nicotine at fractions of a microgram per gram. A report reading ND at a detection limit of 0.063 µg/g is saying nicotine wasn’t there even far below any level that could do anything to you.
Detection limit is the part almost everyone skips, and it carries the real information. "Not detected" is only as strong as the threshold underneath it. ND at 0.5 µg/g means the lab looked casually; ND at 0.05 means it looked hard. Put two nicotine-free brands side by side and the one publishing the lower limit is making the more falsifiable claim — more room to be caught out, and it isn’t.
It helps to know the units, because brands sometimes blur them. Nicotine strength in a normal vape is quoted in milligrams per milliliter — 3 mg/mL, 6 mg/mL. Lab contamination is quoted in micrograms per gram, a thousand times smaller. A 0.85 µg/g trace and a 3 mg/mL product aren’t remotely the same order of magnitude, and a report that mixes the two units is either sloppy or hoping you won’t notice.
Then there’s the awkward reality of trace results. Real testing occasionally turns up small amounts, and they usually aren’t sabotage. Nicotine and nicotine-free liquids often run through the same mixing tanks, fill lines, and flavor houses; residue survives cleaning at levels no tongue can find but an instrument still can. What you want is a brand that prints those numbers instead of burying them. A menu where every flavor comes back at a flat 0.00 should raise an eyebrow — too tidy to be a genuine result. Compare that against a brand that discloses the traces it does find on its lab-testing page.
Nicotine is only the headline. A report worth trusting also screens for diacetyl and acetyl propionyl (the "popcorn lung" chemicals), for vitamin E acetate (the additive tied to the 2019 EVALI lung-injury cases), and for heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic reported in parts per million. Test only for nicotine and skip the rest, and you’ve documented the least interesting thing.
Check who signed it, too. The report should name an accredited third-party lab — ISO/IEC 17025 is the accreditation to look for — plus the method, a work-order number, and a date. A screenshot with no lab name is decoration, not evidence.
One more habit worth building: match the report to the product in your hand. Check the date and the batch or lot number, and make sure they correspond to what you actually bought. A certificate from two years ago, or one with no batch tie at all, tells you the brand tested something once — not necessarily the pod you’re holding. Formulations and suppliers change, and a report only covers the run it was pulled from.
Why bother with all this? Because the whole reason to buy a nicotine-free vape is to keep the habit and drop the addictive part, and that trade only works if "nicotine-free" is proven rather than asserted. Undisclosed nicotine in the pod defeats the purpose, quietly.
So the checklist is short. Nicotine reads ND. The detection limit is low. An accredited lab ran it. The brand also screened for diacetyl, vitamin E acetate, and heavy metals — and published its traces instead of hiding them. Any maker serious about zero-nicotine vaping will hand you that paperwork without being asked twice. A refusal is its own answer.
