Tong wants tougher CT regulation of vape product retailers
Summary
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong is advocating for tougher state regulations on retailers selling vape products, citing a growing epidemic of illegal and untested Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) marketed to children. He highlighted that while only 39 ENDS products are authorized by the FDA, many retailers sell a far greater number, often brightly colored to appeal to youth and containing synthetic nicotine, which is prohibited. Tong proposes a state credentialing program requiring retailers to certify they only sell FDA-approved products, with a grace period for compliance. He presented these suggestions at an informational hearing on youth advocacy, tobacco policy, and public health leadership, with the hope that lawmakers will approve the measures during the upcoming legislative session beginning February 4th.
